This is the story of a certain insane world.

Player name: Yuuki. Occupation: Professional in deadly games.

Overcoming the jinx known as the "Thirty Game Wall," which drastically reduces the survival rate of players, Yuuki continues her journey. A game where death is always close at hand. Next, she takes on a remote island in the middle of the ocean. Eight players have gathered there. Among them are seasoned veterans whom Yuuki knows. The game is "Cloudy Beach." Fool me twice, shame on me
Quick tldr

If you didn't love season 1 of SHIBOYUGI, then you probably won't like this. I found the movie dull overall and would consider it about on level with the second half of season 1.

Full review

I admittedly wasn't a big fan of the first season, especially its second half. So I wasn't going into this movie with the greatest investment in its world and characters. So why did I watch it? I had an afternoon to kill and was a bit curious as to whether the movie would be able to recapture my interest in the series. It did not.

The good

The presentation is interesting at times. I like how a lot of the time we see things through a perspective that feels like we're watching things unnoticed. A lot of very distant or peeping camera views that give things a nice disconnected voyeuristic vibe.

The bland

Unfortunately, that's where my positive comments broadly end. A lot of this movie just quite dull and the stylistic elements felt a lot more like corner cutting then they did a cool aesthetic. I'll go over a couple of them now:

1: Is it animation if you just hold on a still frame?

The movie too often holds on still frames for too long, especially in the first half. Holding on a still frame occasionally can be fine, but several times it just holds on a visually uninteresting wall texture or something of similar dullness.

2: faceless talking

a lot of the time people are talking (almost all the time in the fist half), we do not see their faces/mouths. Either they'll be in that lack of detail style where there's no detail on their face, or their face/mouth just won't be in frame.

I noticed this early on and couldn't unsee it. It's honestly kinda strange. I wouldn't be surprised if this was somewhat of a budgetary thing (no need to animate lip movements or facial expressions) and probably made dubbing it a lot easier.

When paired with the animation just holding on still frames (like walls, etc) it reminded me a lot of the gag gintama would do when it would just have characters talking over a still image of the yorozuya exterior to save budget/time. Unlike gintama though, the dialogue just wasn't enough to sell these scenes for this movie, so it just felt quite dull.

3: Pacing

This movie is slow. Even when things are happening it feels slow. Maybe some of that has to do more with how it just failed to engage me, rather then the actual pacing of the movie. But that doesn't change that the movie did just feel nothing was really happening.

Characters

The characters were generally bland and uninteresting. The movie seems to agree, because most of the cast barely get any focus.

Yuki herself is alright, I guess? She's a bit interesting as characters go and clearly has a lot going on internally, but that just leaves her coming off as very absent and adrift throughout most of the movie. She just wasn't interesting enough to carry my interest when the rest of the cast weren't able to really interest me at all.

Okay, are these supposed veterans so hopeless? Like genuinely, I find it hard to believe that most of them made it as far as the movie tells us they have.

Secondly, why were so many disciples/students of existing characters? Like I thought we already did that the last 2 games. Did this game really need to have another Mishiro student and Kyara student and Hakushi student. I don't really see what it gains from this other then making this world feel really small. At least with the Hakushi student it was a bit more interesting as a direct pair with Yuki.

Story + game

The story was there. The game itself was fairly standard, but I feel like it could've been made interesting if the movie actually cared about telling an engaging story.

Instead the first half is mostly an almost dreamlike experience of "ooh, is Yuki the killer??? has she finally lost it???", before the movie just abruptly cuts that whole thread by having another character confirm Yuki isn't the killer. By the time Yuki's head is actually in the game, the real killer gets revealed to us the audience (and then the characters) pretty shortly.

I feel like the movie could've worked if it had actually devoted any time to its murder mystery premise and built some genuine intrigue surrounding the identity of the killer. (whereas it felt like no one was really bothered about the potential killer in their midst or out there on the island. I get that they're desensitized, but some caution would be nice.)

The other way to make it interesting would be to have Yuki genuinely have been the killer. I feel like that could have been interesting.

Conclusion

The movie is just boring. I won't be watching any more SHIBOYUGI. I would recommend this movie to anyone who's having trouble falling asleep.
