  Attack on Titan Lost Girls OVAs thoughts

  Covering the content inside the OVAs, yet again, spoilers here. These OVAs consist of some “Lost Girl” stories, the girls in question being Annie for the first two and Mikasa for the last. Annie’s 2 OVA episodes follow her completing a mundane bit of detective work inside of the military police, which actually turns out to be quite eventful. Mikasa’s OVA episode explores an alternate reality in which her parents are not killed which involves her relationship with Eren. On Annie’s OVA specifically, the interrogation work she did wasn’t the most entertaining, a lot of her questions were just scenes in which there was a lot of chatter, and by the end she explained how she was reading along the lines anyway. Besides this, a lot of her interrogations ended up with violence. This perfectly fits Annie as the character we know though, she often speaks better with force than with her words and we know her to be one of the most capable fighters inside of the training camp. This is kinda touched upon at some points too, we see reflections of her past and the mentor that trained her and I feel this does help push this point along. The actual investigation itself gives little tidbits of information about what life is like there too. She enters a tavern and speaks to the regulars as well as the bartender, which gives a further glimpse into what life is like inside of the walls, which is not something we really see as much in the main series. Also, the drugs she finds the regulars using really provides a more unique perspective too. It shows what people do to forget their problems inside the walls and it does make sense that there would be drug use in as sad of a society as that. Her investigation also brings her to find a normal set of apartments, this is also pretty unique to this OVA set, in fact, we even see what rowdy neighbours are like in this world, how cool! The investigation gets more intense when Annie is held at gunpoint and forced to go into a taxi cart, this leads to us meeting two new characters and in the end, Annie is forced to use her titan ability, which was the most intense moment we get in this OVA set. This was pretty unexpected seeing the risk that would come with activating this power within the walls, but, she seemingly got away with it. I was surprised by the ending though, she meets with the lost girl who she was meant to find and completely covers for her, giving her a permit to move to Wall Rose. She also covers for the father of the missing girl too, who actually had killed someone during her investigation. This was all quite a weird ending, but I can’t say I wasn’t satisfied, since I feel she did the right thing. This story probably wasn’t that important, but it does give some more context around Annie, and if you’re someone looking for that then you’d be quite happy with this. The Mikasa OVA simply showed how her past would look if her parents weren’t killed, it provides a unique perspective into Eren and Mikasa’s personalities and how the events they went through forged who they are. It also seems quite idealistic, and in the end it turns out that Mikasa was simply seeing what she wanted to see before she faced death, since this dream came in her mind before she almost died in Trost. The parallel between Armin in both Trost and also in her mind was neat to see, but this OVA wasn’t all that exciting. It’s still nice that it exists though.
