  Attack on Titan No Regrets OVA, Levi's OVA, thoughts

  I am covering a pretty short amount of content, so the events of the OVA will be mentioned, buzzword: spoilers This OVA is quite interesting since it looks into the one in the main cast of the show who we don’t see as much of in terms of their backstory, Levi. It definitely feels necessary, Levi isn’t touched upon much in the main series and his backstory definitely hasn’t been mentioned at all by this point adjacent to the main series. His character always seemed like he had relatively weak motivations, so what this OVA have us was quite good to see. This essentially consists of Levi’s life in the underground, which seemingly is never shown in the present day in the main series, although I do remember Armin mentioning they were in the entrance to one at some point. This underground setting has the most dire living situation of any area within the walls pre-fall of Shiganshina. The people living there are completely removed from life above the walls and don’t interact with the titans at all, which really makes it seem quite something that Levi isn’t afraid of the titans, although the lack of fear he has may also come from the poor conditions of living down there. Anyway, his hardened personality definitely comes from living down there and his companions are suffering in their similar respects. The situation created is that Levi and crew have one member of their group whose leg is poorly. This same case goes for many who live underground due to the lack of sunlight, but the fact remains, Levi and crew want to help the member of their team who is having troubles with their leg through paying for treatment. Their way to do this, is by a mission that is given to them by a mysterious figure. This mission leads to them being captured by the Survey Corps but this is actually part of the plan, their main goal is to kill Erwin Smith. This was quite a surprise considering that Levi and Erwin got along well in the main series, and so this light motivation led to his crew happily joining the corps with the added incentive of being able to live above the ground. This incentive is quite charming for them since they’d previously showed how bad living underground was, and the corruption is even further emphasised by the fact that people needed to pay to get above ground. In the end, they are unable to kill Erwin Smith, and Levi’s chums are killed by an abnormal titan. This leads to my favourite scene in these two OVA episodes, Levi’s moment of despair in which he finds his comrades killed. This is also with the added information that the mission given to them was actually unreliable, it really was different to see Levi in such a state, although the talk given to him by Erwin was fully in character for him and actually gave some quite sensible motivation to move on from what had happened. Levi’s motivation in the end turns out to be based on following Erwin into battle, it’s not all that strong, but at least he has some sort of motivation compared to what we had seen from him before. ~~~~~~
