Joshikousei ni Korosaretai is a psychological manga by Usamaru Furuya. I've read as well as reviewed several of his other series prior to this one, and let me just tell you...
I might not give all of his series great scores, but he's probably one of my favorite mangakas. His series are always just so wonderfully weird in ways I just really love. In addition, he really seems to have no... restraint?
That's probably not the right word to use. It just seems like he'll do a series on anything he feels like. From a crazy high school club building a horrific robot to the Children's Crusade.
The sky's the limit with Usamaru Furuya. Though... that kind of led to... I don't want to say disappointment, but I definitely was expecting there to be a bit more to this one than I ended up getting.
The primary idea of this manga is that a male teacher is really, really obsessed with thoughts of being killed by a high school girl. He just really wants to be strangled to death. By a high school girl. Emphasis on the high school girl. Italics on the high school girl. Bold too on the high school girl.
Header as well on the high school girl.
...What was I saying? Ah, yes. Our main character, this really weird but normal on the surface high school teacher really wants to be killed by a high school girl. And I really loved that core idea because we see all these different interactions between him and the other characters who have absolutely no idea what is currently going on through this guy's head.
But we, the readers, of course, have already been shown clearly what this guy has been fantasizing and dreaming about. Which makes the teacher even more disturbing when he's just normally interacting with our strange cast of characters.
Speaking of which, I was fine with how strange the other characters were when they were introduced because I thought the teacher's plan of getting his high school girl of choice to kill him was going to convoluted and actually involve these other characters orbiting around the main girl. Instead, the teacher's plan turned out to be the most disappointing part of the manga.
Which brings into question, why are the other characters so weird? Like the main girl's friend is... for one, she has Asperger's. That's not me making a poor joke against this character or anything, she genuinely has Asperger's.
But also, she's clairvoyant? Or rather, she can sense future events? She can sense in advance when earthquakes are about to happen, and she happens to have a really bad feeling about a certain teacher...
Then you have the male student character who is romantically interested in the main girl... perhaps... a bit too romantically interested. Like okay, maybe making an effort to get into the same high school as her is passable.
But like he also hunted down the exact shampoo she uses??
Might want to... I don't know, dial it back a bit?
But yeah, I definitely expected at least him to somehow be incorporated into the teacher's plan to get this girl to kill him. Instead, he just happens to be along for the ride because he's also obsessed with this girl.
Granted, his intentions are admittedly purer than the teacher's.Then, you have the clinical psychologist who joins the school's staff who turns out to be an ex-girlfriend of Mr. I Really Want to Be Strangled By a High School Girl and I was like okay well how is she going to fit into things??? How is she going to fit into this weird tangled mess of characters?
Then you find out how she actually fits and then you go oh. That's it? Really?
Conclusion
Usamaru Furuya manga just seem to draw me in like a black hole.
There's no use in fighting the pull. The weird ideas and the weird characters just make me jump right in fascinated yet desperately wondering where the hell the series is gonna go.
However, Joshikousei ni Korosaretai is unfortunately a misfire. I really have no better way to put it than that. But it's an interesting misfire, nonetheless. And I still really like the character of the teacher. He's just so genuinely creepy and driven by this weird obsession and he is just putting on a facade to everyone he interacts with and I loved that part of this manga.
I give this particular Usamaru Furuya manga a 5.5 out of 10 or 55 out of 100. This isn't his best manga and it sure as hell isn't his best written one. The following spoiler contains some of my issues with the ending. I keep it relatively brief. It definitely does spoil it though, so don't look at it.
Him not being killed by the high schooler girl isn't the end of the world. Like that ending could (and kind of does) work for me. However, the issue is... he received no consequences for his actions other than being forced to stay alive. He... fucking trained a German Shepherd to attack a middle school girl just so he could see if she still possessed her alternate personality which enabled her to kill her abusive father to protect herself.
And the way his ex-girlfriend (who becomes his girlfriend again) just sweeps the whole issue of his goal under the rug after the fact... "wow how conscientious of you to send me a novel version of your plan to get a highschool girl to murder you just in case the police blamed her for your death, hey let's go out for Christmas!"
What?
It wouldn't be an Usamaru Furuya manga if it didn't cause me to react like this at some point. Part of the charm, I suppose.
