DESCRIPTION

Meet Takuya Seo, an otaku who sits behind the popular gals in class, Ijichi and Amane. Since they're people from different "castes," you wouldn't expect them to have much in common. But when their worlds collide over a borrowed eraser, Takuya slips up about his favorite anime, and Amane...is rather quick to correct him. She says she's not a fan, but her familiarity with the series suggests otherwise. Could she be...a fellow geek?!

The highest possible peak of a generic format
Gals can't be kind to Otaku? May come across as obnoxiously cliché. However, as the anime progresses, it demonstrates that using a generic format does not automatically equal a generic anime.

The first “hook,” is is actually quite intriguing, but the setup for the anime is honestly nothing new. At the start, the first interactions were often being caused by convenient coincidences.

One good aspect was how the romance wasn’t rushed, but instead started from both sides starting to bloom a new friendship. For a harem, it didn’t depend on too many cheap shots.

Further down the episodes, the group felt like a genuine friend-group. Romantic feelings started to make more sense and where actually plausible. This did end up leading to the anime to lean further into the slice-of-life genre with romantic aspects, but that isn’t inherently a problem. Their relationship as a gang slowly turned into something sweet and genuine, which was enjoyable to watch.

Otaku-kun (Takuya Seo):

The main guy Seo (also known as Otaku-kun) really gives me mixed feelings. He is not completely generic in a sense, but he isn’t particularly interesting either. Due to his character not being overly ambiguous or unique, it's not really interesting to see him on screen. You often find yourself watching for the gangs dynamic evolve over time, rather than watching it for Seo himself. He isn't particularly compelling as an character, but he feels more believable than most protagonists.

His standing in class annoys me. The anime uses the excuse that because he is an Otaku, he is isolated from class. While it is completely plausible for someone to have no friends, in this case it just feels like a cheap way to not introduce new side characters. The way the two main girls approached him felt natural, but aside from that we never see him interact with many other people. Obviously, he has interactions with other characters, but there is always this hyper-fixation that he only really talks to the two girls.

He is a dense, semi generic character with a couple unique aspects and a wholesome attitude.

Kotoko Ijichi:

Both girls are great characters in their own way. Ichiji first comes across as bland and cliché, looking like a plain old gyaru. However, as the show develops, she evolves into something new. She is much more grounded than you would think, with her emotions properly explored in later episodes. She feels very human, leaning towards a popular girl in school rather than an over-the-top gyaru.

Kei Amane:

Amane is more ambitious in terms of Ijichi, with a couple of character traits that really stood out. I was surprised how much I had come to like her. Any internal struggles she had were brushed off quickly and it was not very satisfying, but as a character she was very likeable. She never felt one dimensional and her interactions with Otaku-kun were always fun to watch.

Side characters:
While there are a couple side characters, they really didn’t stand out. Each of them could have been plucked out the story with no problems. Lifeless would be the best way to describe them. They are there to develop the girls more than develop an interesting cast.

There wasn't an complete absence, as there are still a few characters that appear. For example, Amane has a little sister who has a few good moments. The problem is that none of them move the plot forwards. If they were more interesting it would be fine, but the lack of care i felt for these side characters makes everything feel pointless.

I wish they introduced a few new classmates properly. The lack of diverse imteractions gives the illusion that the girls focus is always on Otaku-kun, and all his focus is on them, making it feel like a harem rather than the wholesome romance it could be.

Some things I loved and reasons to watch this anime:
- Animation and style: The art style is very unique. Personally, I love it and it is truly like eye candy, setting it apart from the mass-produced “anime colour pallet” we often see. The animation is also never too static, which makes for a smooth watching experience. Character acting was also great, with good expressions that never felt too stiff. And the super detailed eyes was just something else. Ive never liked eyes as much as i do now before this anime.
- The characters: All the characters are very enjoyable to watch, with each one of them having their own personal charm and uniqueness. Their interactions are the star of the show, each time they talked it was either super wholesome, or genuinely funny. Except for some mildly generic themes and lacklustre side-cast, its uniqueness within its main characters dynamics make this watch worth watching.
- Humour: This anime surprised me by being really funny. You always see those anime’s that throw out the same 3 jokes over and over again, and it gets boring quick. However, there are some actual good jokes in there. I will say that Amane carries the humour a lot of the time.
- The opening: The OP’s choreography and song is genuinely so goated. I don’t know any people who would watch a show for the OP, but it's THE best of this anime season.
Why its great, not amazing:
- The genre: Due to the “love triangle,” nature of the romance, the romantic developments are quite slow. Further down the episodes, it feels more like a slice-of-life with aspects of romance. You shouldn’t walk in expecting an amazing romantic story, but rather some cute and feel-good interactions between an interesting (but small) cast.
- Uniqueness: The characters are unique, but it’s not like they completely revolutionise anything. The same can be said about the story, it doesn’t really step outside the comfort/safe zone of romance anime’s. It has plenty of the stuff you would expect from other shows (yes, there is a beach episode and a fireworks festival).
- Romance: The romance between the girls feels relatively natural. The problem about have 2 main girls is that you have to give them equal chances and developments. This leads to a predictable outcome when it comes to romantic moments, which is why romance in this anime doesn’t really stand out. After a while, there ends up being no new romantic developments.
If I were to call it anything it would be this: a filler comfort-show for when you want to switch your brain off. It’s definitely worth a watch, but not an “amazing” anime.
