50/100It's a teacher-student romance that throws out all of the juicy power dynamics, how good do you think it could be?Continue on AniListContent Warning: Ageplay, Groping, Exhibitionism, Humiliation, Incest, Loli, Nudity, Voyeurism
__- - - Intro - - -__ For a brief sparkling moment, a few beautiful hours, Mistress Kanan is Devilishly Easy made me want to believe that the average seasonal ecchi had matured in some way. That sexual confidence and a brave interest in bonafide kink dynamics had burgeoned from the adolescent morass of the genre.
I went into Yowa Yowa Sensei with a hope I'd never had before, and got to watch that burgeoning new life get crushed right in front of me.
Yowa Yowa Sensei is thoroughly mediocre from start to finish. It dredges up almost every pitfall endemic to harem comedy anime, and forces you to sit there and watch as it steps on each and every one. The score is non-existent, the characters are uninspired, the animation feels stiff and the core romance simply forgot to manifest. And worst of all? It's dull. Boring. Tired. Exhausting. Any other synonym of your choosing.
If you're showing a lesbian boobs, and her reaction is to check how much of the episode is left, then you've made some major mistakes.
__- - - More Cardboard Than A Warehouse - - -__ Regarding characters, Yowa Yowa Sensei… Forgot to make any.
Abikura is a do-nothing harem lead. A man so thoroughly unimpressive and poorly defined that I can't really describe him beyond generalizations. He's flatly kind. He doesn't have any real aspirations in life or hobbies. He goes to school and comes back home with not a single thought in between. A pervert who's constantly given excuses to gawk at women yet never initiates any of it so as to remain "pure." And like most generalized harem protagonists, all the women in the show swoon over him. I'm aware that's a feature, not a bug, but that doesn't mean it's not grating. Especially if you're not the kind of viewer to self-insert into men like that.
Hiwamura can be charming at times, and "pathetically weak teacher" is a cute concept. But she is so totally pathetic, so entirely helpless without Abikura, that she never really forms into a real character. There's an occasional allusion to her past, or half-hearted suggestions towards her being physically disabled that never culminate into anything. In the absence of that, she's a character that starts and stops with the bit. Phasing into existence to get groped, and phasing out of existence once the scene ends.
And Mizuki, Yuuki, and Kaya all drift in that eternal "supporting character" abyss; Serving narrative roles over actually participating in a narrative. Mizuki goes through, what, three different revisions in this season alone? A comically strong gyaru who's occasionally the straight man, occasionally an LI, and who also turns into a sniveling wreck the second Abikura does anything. Yuuki is an excuse to show breasts being groped and cosplay being worn. And Kaya might as well not exist. I don't really know why she's in the crew beyond being keeping the scenarios a little fresh.
The gleaming gem here is Abikura's sister. Adding a twenty-nine year old sister with baby fever into the harem is a spark of perverted brilliance, and having her compete with Abikura for Hiwamura's affection had the potential to be a fun twist.
Guess whether or not the show actually went anywhere fun with that.
Of course it didn't.
__- - - No Heart Behind The Boobs - - -__ All of this would be fine if Yowa Yowa Sensei was actually erotic. It's not my thing, but "porn without plot" is popular for a reason. Unfortunately, Yowa Yowa Sensei can't even manage that.
Confidence is key to any erotic work; You can tell any erotic narrative you want, and so long as you're doing it with an honest heart (and a megaphone), you'll find an audience. Plus at least a grudging respect from critics like myself. The main reason I had so much fun with Mistress Kanan is Devilishly Easy was because it knew what it wanted and wasn't embarrassed to do it. It dived into awkward sister incest dynamics with gusto, and relished in the actual erotic outcome of that without undercutting itself. Kakegurui is a favorite of mine almost entirely because of how it lets its cast of women relish in being freaky, horny, and gross. Rarely passing judgement on them outside of how they gamble.
Yowa Yowa Sensei, to contrast, feels a deeply juvenile shame about even fairly modest erotic scenarios. Abikura is an incredibly frustrating protagonist to watch. The show goes to great lengths to minimize and justify every sexual thought that man has. Every single erotic scene stems from some factor out of his control. His sister pranks Hiwamura into wearing nothing but an apron, Yuuki guilts Hiwamure into wearing a bunny suit, Hiwamura gets tired and falls ass-first onto him, etc. etc. etc.
Sure, a handful of the scenarios work. But more often then not there's a frustrating chasteness to it all. Abikura is constantly in denial about his feelings for Hiwamure, chastising himself for thinking of her sexually and rejecting perceived advances. Hiwamura is blind to her own feelings, never intentionally teasing Abikura and being led into erotic encounters by others. So, if neither of the two leads are enthusiastically into one another, then what's the point? Am I supposed to care about the ninth time Hiwamura's top falls off when I know it's a moment that doesn't matter to either of the leads? Am I supposed to get turned on the fifty-eighth time Hiwamura trips and falls onto Abikura with no consequence, like a dog reacting to a clicker?
Again, like Abikura being an insufferable nobody, I know this is by design. It's a "best of both worlds" fantasy; You get to do sensual things to a woman while maintaining an intellectual purity. "You're not a pervert groping her, things just happened that way!" But unfortunately for the anime, I'm an adult. And I personally find eager and mutual attraction to be infinitely more of a turn-on than eternally avoiding the question.
__- - - Say It With Me: Misogyny! - - -__ I don't know if this really needs to be said, but yeah. Yowa Yowa Sensei doesn't really know how to write women at all.
The entire premise is teenage wish fulfillment. A teacher-student relationship where you, the student, are in complete control and have the moral high ground. That's where reality sets in; It doesn't matter how wimpy Hiwamura is, a twenty-two year old college grad is never going to be less mature than a sixteen year old student. So instead of embracing the inherent power dynamics at play, the anime instead opts to slice away at Hiwamura until she is nothing more than an object to use. She is an adult who is too weak to use a knife, gets exhausted after five minutes of stretching, can barely speak, and needs Abikura to do everything for her. As the show goes on she also loses what little authority she had, as Kaya's photography club means she's little more than an upperclassman. All the while she praises Abikura for doing the bare minimum.
And this sexual character flattening (Do people still say "Flanderization?") sweeps its way across the entire cast. I already mentioned Mizuki, but Yuuki and Kaya also fall victim to it. Everyone around Abikura eventually, through no effort on his part, falls for his charms. And in doing so they surrender every character trait they had that isn't "mom" or "sister." Even Yuuki, the boyish little pervert that she is, calms down enough to offer herself up to Abikura a handful of times.
I know I'm talking to a brick wall here, and that "a seasonal ecchi didn't write compelling women" is hardly newsworthy. But it still managed to suck any excitement I had for this show dry by the halfway mark.
__- - - Final Thoughts - - -__ I enjoy ecchi. Or rather, I want to enjoy it. I think I'm at a place in my life where I can fully admit that erotic art and media is cool. No caveats, no strings, nothing. And my lovestruck lesbian heart enjoys nothing more than watching beautiful women be funny while their oversized chests bounce around. And because of that, Yowa Yowa Sensei was bearable. Every episode had at least one joke that landed, and the novelty of "wait what, there's actual topless nudity in this??" kept me tagging along for a while.
But I can't say it kept me hooked. I lost steam around the halfway mark, and while I powered through the second half of the show in a single day, I needed to. Otherwise I would've put it off for who knows how long. None of the characters made an impression on me, I had to consistently reference their names despite writing this the day I finished the show. And above all else, I don't think I ever felt any heart in this anime. It's erotica without any goal. Porn without any perversion. And like... What are we doing here?
Yowa Yowa Sensei is passable. But I don't think I'll ever recommend it to anyone, and I'll probably forget about it in just a few months. There's so much good erotic content out there, save yourself four hours and just read Ao3 or curate a good Bluesky "for you page" instead.
