  My Review of "Isekai Office Worker: The Other World’s Books Depend on the Bean Counter"!

  I did not look at the tags of this show and was jumpscared in the second episode…

  ____Story____

  Seiichirou Kondou used to be an average middle-aged Japanese salaryman until he witnessed a girl, Yua Shiraishi, getting summoned into another world and accidentally got dragged along with her. While the girl had a purpose as a holy maiden, Seiichirou lacked one, so he chose to work as an accountant at a kingdom’s royal accounting department. His work as an accountant would lead to a lot of conflicts going on that would lead him to grow close to new faces and improve the finances of the kingdom.

  ____The Good____

  I really liked this anime’s story. I feel like it tackled a fair amount of issues while also making it an enjoyable show that didn’t feel too serious but also didn’t skim over the conflicts. I liked the pacing of the show and the characters were enjoyable for the most part. Having an average Japanese salaryman protagonist actually do their work in another world instead of doing some extreme thing like killing a final boss or saving the world felt refreshing since I’m not too familiar with more shows that do this sort of thing. I think that this makes the story even more unique and keeps me invested in the plot. The story was well-written in my honest opinion, but there was something that hindered it (which I will mention in the bad section of this review). I also liked the ED and it fit quite well with the vibes of the show. The visuals were pretty good too and enhanced the story even more.

  ____The Bad____

  I’m going to be completely honest, I was not a fan of the say gex. I don’t like how it was introduced and how many times it was shown or teased throughout these 12 episodes. I understand that physical contact helps heal Seiichirou, but really? Say gex? It just feels like a bad excuse to show it. There’s better ways to justify and bring in say gex for a story, and this was not it in my opinion. I’m not saying that I dislike BL, but the way it was handled in this show felt poor and kind of ruined the quality of the story for me.

  ____The Downright Ugly____

  I don’t think there’s anything downright ugly with this anime.

  ____Is It Worth The Watch?____

  If you’re fine with the somewhat frequent say gex in this anime or have a strong liking towards BL, you’ll probably find this anime worth the watch. However, if you’re not fine with either of the things I just mentioned, you’re better off looking for another fantasy isekai. The story of this anime is pretty good and kinda unique, but man, the say gex ruins plenty of parts for me.

  (I was considering rating this show a 69 for its contents, but it didn't really fit realistically)

  Interesting premise, weak romance

  I started this series because the premise sounded really refreshing. Instead of following another overpowered protagonist who immediately becomes a hero, we get an ordinary office worker whose greatest strength is accounting. The workplace setting, financial management, and political side of the kingdom were genuinely interesting, and those aspects were easily the highlight of the series for me. It was nice to watch a protagonist solve problems with knowledge and experience rather than magic or brute force.

  Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the romance.

  The biggest issue for me was the healing system. I understand the in-universe explanation that Kondou is a special case because his body isn't adapted to magic, but that explanation honestly made it feel even more convenient. Instead of making the world feel believable, it felt like the rule existed purely to justify intimate scenes between the main couple. There were countless other ways the author could've handled mana transfer or magical treatment without relying on sexual intimacy. A ritual, prolonged physical contact, or even direct mana transfer through touch could've achieved the same goal while allowing the romance to develop naturally.

  Because of that, a lot of the intimacy didn't feel earned. Rather than reaching that stage after building trust and emotional closeness, the story jumps straight into it because Kondou needs treatment. The physical relationship comes first, while the emotional relationship struggles to catch up. Instead of making those moments feel romantic, they often felt like another step in a medical procedure.

  I also wish the story had spent more time exploring Kondou's feelings. We never really get to see him sit down and question why he's becoming attached to Aresh or how his feelings are changing over time. Since the healing process plays such a major role in bringing them together, I wanted to see more internal conflict and self-reflection. That would've made the romance feel much more believable. Instead, it often felt like the audience was simply expected to accept that they were falling in love because the plot kept putting them in intimate situations.

  Another thing that didn't work for me was the chemistry between the two leads. They definitely have caring moments, but both characters are so serious that many of their interactions feel more professional than romantic. I kept waiting for scenes that would make me genuinely root for them as a couple, but they rarely came. Most of the emotional weight seemed to come from the healing scenes rather than ordinary conversations, shared experiences, or quiet moments where they simply got to know each other better.
  
  Ironically, I think the workplace side of the story received more development than the romance itself. The accounting, politics, and kingdom management were engaging enough that I often found myself more interested in Kondou's work than in his relationship. That's a shame because the series clearly wants the romance to be one of its biggest emotional payoffs.

  I also found it funny that despite all the emphasis on how effective the healing was, Kondou still looked permanently exhausted. If all that treatment is supposed to restore his health, at least let the poor man lose the eye bags. ?

  I don't think this is a bad series. There are ideas here that I genuinely enjoyed, and the office setting gives it an identity that separates it from many other isekai. However, the romance never clicked for me because it relied too heavily on the healing mechanic instead of allowing the relationship to grow naturally. I think the story already had enough opportunities to develop their feelings through everyday interactions, so the intimate healing scenes ended up feeling more like a writing shortcut than meaningful romantic progression.
  
  Overall, this was an interesting fantasy with a unique premise, but a romance that felt underdeveloped and overly dependent on a trope that never fully convinced me. The workplace and political elements kept me watching, but they weren't enough to make up for a relationship that I never became emotionally invested in.
