50/100This anime is disgusting; the incest it contains is inexplicable.Continue on AniListMagic Maker started with a premise that sounded interesting to me: a man reincarnates into a world without magic and tries to create it himself. Unfortunately, the execution made it difficult for me to enjoy the series.
My biggest issue is the protagonist. Even though he was an adult in his previous life, he often behaves like a child far beyond what I would expect from someone with adult memories. This creates a disconnect between how the story wants me to view him and how he actually acts. On top of that, he frequently comes across as a pervert, which made many scenes uncomfortable rather than funny. Personally, I found him even harder to tolerate than Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei.
The relationship with his sister is another major problem. The series spends a surprising amount of time pushing romantic and incestuous undertones between them. What made this worse for me is that the protagonist clearly understands that marrying his sister would be wrong, yet he still entertains the idea once there is a possibility that they are not blood-related. Instead of making the relationship feel emotional or meaningful, it came across as forced and awkward.
The story itself is not terrible. In fact, I thought the early episodes were fairly interesting, especially when the focus was on discovering and developing magic. The concept had a lot of potential and there were moments where I genuinely wanted to see where the story would go. However, after the sickness arc, the pacing started to feel rushed. Events happened so quickly that I often felt like I had missed important information. Character developments and plot points did not have enough time to breathe before the story moved on to the next thing.
The resolution of the sister's illness was also disappointing to me. It felt less like a satisfying payoff and more like the story was relying on emotional attachment between the characters to solve the problem. Because of that, the climax lacked impact.
The animation and overall production quality were serviceable, but nothing particularly memorable. The worldbuilding was interesting in concept, yet the series never explored it deeply enough to make the setting stand out from other fantasy anime.
Overall, Magic Maker had a premise that could have led to a creative fantasy story about discovering magic from scratch. Instead, I was distracted by an unlikeable protagonist, uncomfortable sibling dynamics, and pacing issues that became more noticeable as the series progressed. While there were some enjoyable ideas, they were not enough to outweigh the problems for me.
