DESCRIPTION
Koizumi, Shintarou is 30 years old, a virgin, and has isolated himself in his room for 15 years. He has become a burden on his father, Koizumi Yasujirou. one day, Shintarou makes a proposition that if Yasujirou gets a girlfriend, Shintarou will come out of his room. It turns out that Yasujirou has already made a girlfriend, a young beautiful woman, Yoshinaga Haruka, who is with Yasujirou for her own personal reasons. Yasujirou and Haruka decide to get married, but Yasujirou dies on their honeymoon. Now Haruka decides to take care of Shintarou, and so this weird "mother and son" are now living together.

A quiet experiment that deals with internal demons rather than external onesContinue on AniListI read this first when it came out, just re-read it now, nothing much changed, at the time I had never heard of agoraphobia and thought this whole idea was really strange, now in perspective I get it a little more, I have come to understand the underlying systemic pressure that manifests as severe mental illness. However I wish more efforts would have been made to treat the subject with a little more expertise, like, the "expert" character in this story doesn't really help much or give any insights on how to handle the Main Character. anyway, I guess it's an interesting social phenomena and somehow Oku managed to make an erotica out of it, lmao.
The art is fantastic, the room the main character lives in is very detailed and seeing all the electronics in there really serves as a 2000 time capsule, as for the other main character, by now we get Oku has a type, the woman in this manga resembles a lot the one from HEN, although shorter. it's definitely an improvement in the style, the sex scenes are dealt with grace, still sexual but not overly explicit. The way he renders the clutter of the apartment—the stacked boxes, the tangled wires, the glowing screens and primitive text, creates an atmosphere that bring back memories. The facial expressions here carry a weight of vulnerability that wasnt present in his early work. The line work is cleaner, less chaotic than Gantz, allowing the quiet moments to breathe without visual noise.
What I liked the most was when in a few ambient scenes that are supposed to show random civilians on the street, you can actually see the characters from HEN, and Gantz going about their day, as a reminder that this is the same world they are living in. idk it was cool. It creates this universe where superpowered chaos and mundane isolation coexist seamlessly. Recognizing those familiar faces just walking by adds a layer of reward for having read Oku’s early work. It feels like a hidden easter egg for long-time fans that rewards attention to detail.
I don’t have much more to say about this story, is fairly simple and all characters make crazy decisions, the ending was touching at the very least. Ultimately, it stands as a curious footnote in Oku’s bibliography, a quiet experiment that deals with internal demons rather than external ones. It lacks the high-octane stakes of his other work, but that lack of external conflict forces us to look inward at the character's broken psyche. The final resolution feels earned, despite the erratic behavior leading up to it, offering a glimmer of hope typical in Oku’s endings.
