DESCRIPTION

Akira Oda and his high school classmates are summoned to another world! While the other students are granted cheat abilities through the summoning, Akira merely gains the abilities of a mediocre “assassin.” However, his status soon surpasses “hero,” the strongest profession. After Akira becomes suspicious of the King behind the summoning, he is falsely framed for a crime and forced to flee.

VISUALS and CHARACTERS
The visuals are honestly above average. The way they build the fantasy world looks great, the cinematography really stands out. The fight scenes, like in the dungeon, elf kingdom, and beast kingdom, all look amazing. Even the non-fight scenes, like Akira and Amelia’s date in the beast kingdom, feel super immersive. Some CGI parts like the fountain are noticeable, but still fine overall. Character designs are also nice not repetitive at all. You can clearly tell which race or kingdom each character is from. Even the NPCs are well made they actually have eyes and small interactions that make the world feel alive.

STORY and DEVELOPMENT
The story is not very special. It uses the usual "teleported to another world and becomes overpowered” idea. The problem is the title focuses on the word assassin, but Akira doesn’t act like one. An assassin should kill silently and quickly, but Akira fights head on, everyone knows his title “Silent Assassin,” and the worst he even struggles to kill people. It’s fine if he’s a high schooler who feels bad about killing, but the way it’s told doesn’t make sense. His personality is cold and emotionless, yet he refuses to kill anyone it’s a big contradiction. Amelia (The Princess Elf) also makes things worse with her overly kind and naive behavior, so the story goes nowhere. Even in the last episode, when Akira finally decide kills someone, for me it feels empty and emotionless. The scene with Saran (the Captain) should’ve been dramatic, but it wasn’t. Yoru (the cat) also doesn’t make sense he appear becomes a dungeon boss, serves the Demon Lord loses, then instantly becomes Akira’s loyal partner. His change happens too fast and it feels shallow. Next is about the hero party. Before the teleportation, they didn’t care about Akira at all, no one even talked to him except Kyousuke (The Samurai Guy), and that was only because their sisters were friends. But after the teleportation, they suddenly care too much about him and act like they can’t do anything without him. It doesn’t make sense, because their stats aren’t that weak they even have the “Hero Class,” which is supposed to be one of the most overpowered classes. The Demon Lord is also inconsistent first he wants Akira then he doesn’t, then he wants Akira alive then not. Even though the Demon Lord has his own reasons, his inconsistent changes make him look like he has no conviction.

Favorite Character
If I had to pick a favorite, it’d be Latticenail (The Demon Lord’s Daughter). She’s way different from what you’d expect from a “demon.” She’s naive and doesn’t want to see killing right in front of her, but at the same time, she knows some bad people just need to die. So she simply walks away and pretends she doesn’t know anything which actually makes her kind of interesting.

Spoiler-free Review of My Status as Assasin: Terrible main character ruins the show.

If you wish, scroll down, start it, and use it as your background music while you read. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Story ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The story covers Akira Oda, a high schooler that is summoned to another world with his classmates. While one of them is the hero, his class is the "Assassin" and his skills are way higher than the so-called Hero. He's falsely accused of a crime and has to flee and find a way to survive in this MMORPG-like world. The story is below average. The setting is Isekai 101, a.k.a. a person or group gets summoned and somehow the protagonist is really strong in the beginning. I find that there are two main points that I was extremely turned off by with the story of this anime. One is that Akira has extreme "Plot Armor", if he's close to die, he'll just "heal", if he's close to lose, he'll just "win" with his "OP traits". That takes off so much of his own growth. (Me throwing the anime out after it was done) The second point in which I was turned off is that the character develops a really "intense" romance in the anime. He falls deeply in love with a person from this world, and while that's totally fine since other animes have done such, I feel like this one was extremely rushed. They meet and two episodes later they're already willing to die for each other which is weird. Overall, I consider the story below average because there's a combination of standard isekai setting + very fast romance, and it's not a cute romance like Kirito/Asuna or Rudeus/Sylphie. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Art ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The art in general was good. I liked the aesthetic of the anime; the magic was well animated, monsters were cool, and character designs were also nice. Animation-wise, I felt like some moments, especially in combat, were lacking, but that doesn't happen all the time; they did have some cool moments and fights. In general, I don't think the art will turn people off the anime. (Couldn't find one cool combat gif, so take elf pout) ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Characters ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ There are a medium amount of characters in this anime: Akira, his schoolmates, companions he finds on the way, and some other side characters. In general, they're okay; different side characters fit a different purpose in the story and I don't think they were bad in general. As always, with comments towards main characters, Akira was terrible. He's such a simpleton and his whole motivation quickly shifts from the main theme to his romance interest. He's also very indecisive, and while he does grow stronger in the anime, I feel like he had no personal development. He's 100% the reason I wouldn't watch a second season. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Soundtrack ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The soundtrack was good. In general, the soundtrack had enough to keep me in the anime; nothing felt too out of place, with good combat music and dramatic music. The opening was in my opinion really bad, but the ending was very soothing and I personally liked it in general, which is why I put it here.
════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Conclusion ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ If you're like me, you skip everything and read only the conclusion because you don't want to get spoiled with other themes. So I will try to be brief on this point: Don't watch this anime. Honestly, there are so many good isekais out there that I can't see exactly why I would recommend this anime to someone. It lacks animation to be a "battle anime" that you turn off your brain, and it lacks plot development for it to be an anime that you can ignore its weird aspects. I'd only recommend this anime if you're looking for a combination of isekai-battle-anime/romance. If not, just watch other isekais such as Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, SAO, Overlord, Slime, Log Horizon, Konosuba, etc., and you'll have a better experience.

Entertaining isekai with a surprisingly strong romance despite some flaws and weak points. Keen for season 2.
I really enjoyed My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s. It’s entertaining. But what really surprised me about it is was how heavy the romance subplot is, and I loved it. For a shonen isekai (unsure about the demographic ngl, and google was not helpful sorry), the romance felt nice as it is mutual, clear, and emotionally grounded. His relationship with Amelia is genuinely sweet. I adored how protective he is of her and how he’s never hesitant to show how important she is to him. There’s no endless miscommunication or awkward dodging of feelings, they both care deeply about each other, and the mutual feelings and actual confession felt incredibly refreshing for the genre (yay no harem and love triangle!)

That said, the series isn’t without flaws. The plot development often feels rushed or underexplained, and the fights are resolved a little too easily, which makes the stakes feel low. A lot of things are left unanswered in season one, especially around the Demon Lord plot, so it very much feels like a setup. I’m really hoping season two is where the story slows down and properly digs into those threads.

As for the criticism around the MC’s moral dilemma about killing, I’m more forgiving. Yes, it drags on a bit, and the villain’s death feels underwhelming — especially since it happens off-screen after so much build-up. But this feels like the beginning of his character development rather than a payoff moment. People forget that he’s still a normal teenage kid suddenly thrown into another world. Of course he’d struggle with taking a life. That hesitation actually made him feel more human to me, and I think it’s laying the groundwork for his future resolve.

All of that just makes me even more excited for season two. Season one feels very much like a foundation rather than a complete arc: introducing the world, the power system, and the characters bond with each other. The other heroes, Akira and Amelia, and Akira and Night (his familiar).

I’m also hoping season two finally raises the stakes. The Demon Lord plot, the real intention of the royals, were barely explored, so there’s potential there like tougher enemies, harder choices, and consequences that actually linger. With his internal conflict about killing seemingly resolved at least in part, I expect his resolve to be tested in more meaningful ways, especially when protecting Amelia or being forced to choose between mercy and necessity.

Overall, I really enjoyed the series. The romance was a standout for me, the fights even with my criticisms, were still entertaining, and I wasn’t bored for a single second. I loved the character designs, and the animation was solid and consistently enjoyable. Despite its flaws, it was a fun, engaging watch that left me genuinely excited to see where the story goes next. Please make season two!
