100/100Alma-chan Wants to Be a Family has a family dynamic reminiscent of Spy x FamilyContinue on AniListAlma-chan Wants to Be a Family is a wholesome comedy/romance anime about two scientists developing an AI powered robot with insane capabilities that takes the form of a young child. We follow Alma as she does normal kid stuff like go to school and make friends all the while being in the body of a robot. This naturally creates a divide between her and her school-mates as Alma doesn’t always understand them which paves way for some funny shenanigans to ensue. Additionally, Alma is designed and raised by her father Kamisato Enji and her mother Yobane Suzume to be helpful to society. It’s Alma’s altruism and good-nature that get her into funny situations that the humor builds itself around. Finally, interactions with side characters (who I’ll get into later) and her parents and their relationship is another key focus of the humor in the anime. If I compared it to another anime, I’d say that Alma’s family resembles Anya’s family in Spy x Family (hey they even have similar names). Both have cute daughter characters inside of a fake family that slowly takes shape into feeling natural (hell Suzume even looks like Yor if you squint hard enough). And like in Spy x Family, there’s a lot of humor surrounding a potential romance between the fake father and fake mother.
The characters are all basic and reused archetypes. For example Enji’s sister Toki is the caring sister, Makina is the competitive little sister, Tokoyo is the senpai obsessed kouhai, and there are many more. If you know me personally, you know I’m a big sucker for good character writing so usually these archetype characters would lower my score, however, I’m generally very permissive when it comes to character depth in a comedy since the focus is more so on the jokes and character interactions rather than actual depth of character. That’s why despite all the characters being basically rehashed characters from other anime I still hold high esteem for this anime. Alma and her parents hold slightly more depth with us actually knowing about their dreams to be accepted as scientists and because of the romantic tension going on between them. Now that I think about it, Makina does slightly change, maybe a tiny bit. I won’t spoil that though.
I’m not a huge connoisseur of either animation or music so my opinions on them might be skewed. First and foremost, the art style is very cute and fitting for a comedy anime. I don’t notice any animation errors in it either, so for me it checks all boxes. The music is pretty chill I guess. It’s somewhat forgettable since I’m squinting my brain and the only thing coming out is the OP and ED, which speaking of them, they were bangers. The ED gives me this feeling of belonging that warms my heart up.
Overall, I really liked the premise, I found it very interesting. The characters weren’t super fleshed out or really that unique but it worked for a comedy anime and I enjoyed them regardless of their lack of depth. The humor is pretty funny, Alma’s helpful nature gets her involved in a lot of situations and with a lot of people she otherwise wouldn’t interact with. This is a good thing because it broadens the world the anime is in and we aren’t confined to just Alma’s family which would get boring eventually. I really liked this one 10 Makina heads out of 10.
Welp, this is my first review I’m posting. I really hope I did it right and I hope you enjoyed reading it too. Thanks for stopping by :D

75/100Charming, Enjoyable, and a Little LostContinue on AniListNow let me start of by saying I've never left a review on anything before in my life (except for some google maps reviews 10 years ago, if pictures count), and I use anime quite a lot as a "shut-off brain" mechanism that allows me to sit and stare into space and time while I "consume" this piece of media. I do enjoy watching it, but I am not sure if it is for all the same reasons that everyone does. But this review is meant for exactly that, I wanna see how much I was paying attention lol
My first impression of this anime started here on Anilist, believe it or not. One evening I was scrolling this amazing website, and with boredom settling in, I searched for a show that could reignite my endless appetite for new thrills. That was when I noticed a review by a fellow user that caught my attention. It was comparing this title to Spy X family, which I quite liked, and I immediately wanted to see it for myself. And honestly, I was quite perplexed.
At first this show starts of quite timid, setting in the premise that Alma is a killing machine made to show off what those two scientists are capable of making. Not only that, but it features an all-encompassing A.I. that can hack into government property in a few seconds and make any change it desires. And now that they made it, they will instead choose to keep it as their daughter and forge a make-shift family together. Basically, even though they could delve deep into the story and start world-building like hell, the story doesn't take itself seriously at all and acts more like a Episodic TV Short.
I don't really have a lot of complain about, it was thoroughly enjoyable to watch, but it kinda felt like they always kept losing the plot, and some things never got explored / explained at all. The first few episodes still felt somewhat grounded in reality (I'm not trynna say that robots like that are supposed to be normal), But we got to see how Enji and Suzume explored different scenarios that they supposedly never experienced before living together and the trials and tribulations people go through when they start caring for a kid. Alma herself seemed to have developed her personality quite a bit and we got to experience it first hand from the start, which is a great plus.
My issues with the show (or I guess you could say nitpicking) start with how the ball continued to roll, as we continued watching. I kept pausing a lot thinking either this can't be real or that the author thought we just supposedly forgot already. For example, Alma was supposed to hide the fact that she is a robot, but then helps one person and makes a friend and then all of a sudden goes to school and a few episodes later it's okay for everyone to know? Or the fact that Alma made such big renovations to the school and then supposedly everyone was just cool with it, and what I don't get is it was never explained if society is already adapted to robots or... Anyway I'm literally just reading way to much into a soft and silly show that is not supposed to take itself seriously, or "it's explained in the manga".
But that was mostly my main gripes with it, that it has quite a few visible plot holes and a style similar to Nichijou. Overall a good watch if you are bored, it will not scratch the Spy X Family itch, if that is what you are looking for, and may leave you a bit confused on the meaning of it all.
The 'cute family doing cute family stuff' genre is slowly growing, and maybe there is hope that we will start to finally retire the isekai genre lol (by god is it profitable tho)
