75/100Like an Appliance I don't know how, but this show workedContinue on AniListWe all are using appliances in our every day life. Though most people probably don't know, how exactly they work or do the things that make life so much easier. Well we definitely should though, since in this show it can save earth from an alien invasion.
I gotta admit, I mainly originally watched this show out of a whim and due to the fact, that the title character is yet another cat voiced by Etsuko Kozakura for an OLM show (the other being the mascot of the YW franchise Jibanyan). And what I got was a show I still even days later feel kinda confused and conflicted by...yet at the same time enjoyed very much.
The story of an advanced alien species having lost its own technology knowledge and now needing to learn its roots from earths more primitive technology was a pretty unique one I haven't seen before. And this is definitely one of the best aspects of this show. It goes into a lot of detail on how the appliances work and often manages to weave it fittingly into the storylines of each episode. Not to mention its a lot of varied appliances that are being discussed in each episode. I have no knowledge on tech, but I was still able to follow along with many of the explanations given. Helped by the animation showing some great graphics and examples of what it told.
I think my biggest problem or rather my confusion with this show is...the conflicting tones. Its a show about explaining how things like fridges or televisions work made by the same studio that did Pokemon (even if OLM has done more mature and adult anime in the past too) and which has cute cat characters and silly moments in it. So you would think its mainly meant as a childrens anime.
But at the same time, its human characters are mostly university students dealing with things one would at that age and quite a few of the jokes have a very risque if not downright sexual nature (and its not just winks for like an adult audience) and there's lots of messaging about preserving history, culture and technology. So is the show more for an adult audience that just has an interest in appliances? I still don't know.
Same with the genre and whether its meant to be an educational show, a comedy or a romance...yet there are also a small amount of action and fight scenes in this that are treated seriously. Just like with the conflicted intended audience, the tone sometimes seems to be all over the place. Even after the shows big bad easily disposes of the main-characters the first time, the show does stop for a moment to give a lecture on how his tech works. Same with the final episodes still having the silly Slice-of-Life type music playing, as the villain goes into a speech about wanting to destroy everyone and how he wants to do it...
And the ending of the show somehow doing a philosophical speech on the selfish nature of humans, how cats don't care about that...and somehow combining their worlds version of Pokemon GO into this
As for the characters, I did like many of the main-characters and you feel like they develop in their personalities, especially Sakurako overcoming her shyness as the show goes on and her being forced into becoming this role of an earth ambassador. You can feel a difference between her in the first episode and her in the final one. And watching her grow was a joy to watch.
The title character MuuMuu himself is also fairly interesting. At the start of the series, he just seems like your typical silly, selfish anime cat who never takes anything seriously and is just there for cat jokes and for the viewers to get their lectures on appliances and technology. But as the show develops, there are some very interesting, kinda dark reveals about him, especially in the last stretch, that did end up making me like him.
There are only a few characters that still left me confused like Samezu, who on the one hand seems like your typical popular girl who bullies the main-character and keeps talking about “pulling her boyfriend into a dark corner” (the implications being clear). Yet the show also sometimes treats her as like a great friend to Sakurako who's also knowledgeable about beauty stuff and just is shy about her true, kind personality. Once again, the show jumping between the two tones at random, making her an inconsistent character.
Same with the three guys obsessively stalking the most popular girl in the university. Despite their constant harassment of hers, there's never really any payoff for it. Even after one of them near the end almost slaps and pushes her down the stairs...its just instantly forgotten afterwards and they are still being treated like goofy comic relief. Which I just felt like was kinda weird that its never addressed afterwards in any way.
As I said in the introduction of this review, you would think with me feeling this confused about the anime and its clashing tones that I would hate or dislike it. Far from it actually. I still enjoyed a lot about it and I still had a good time. The explanations, the story, the characters I did like and that did develop still made me wanna watch it. Not to mention that its certainly a unique kind of show I haven't seen before, with some important themes of cultural identiy. While I doubt it, should there ever be a 2nd season, I'd be more than happy to watch it. Considering the show still leaving some of its plot threads open by the final episode.
And I would certainly love learning more from it.
