Spoiler-free Review of Grand Blues S2. I waited years for this comedy.
════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Considerations ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ ● This is a spoiler-free review. ● 80+ in my rating means really good. ● I've added one of the anime soundtracks(ED) to the sound section. If you wish, scroll down, start it, and use it as your background music while you read. ● This is a review for the second season. My focus is to explain if this season is worth watching for those who have seen the first one. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Story ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The story follows the format of the previous season, using the same "short story arcs" that work so well for comedy animes. The arcs in this season are really good, and the pacing is excellent for delivering punchlines. As someone who loves this series and has been reading the manga for about 3-4 years, I was particularly excited for this season. It adapted some arcs that I really remembered loving, and seeing those moments animated made me laugh quite a bit. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Art ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The art is good, and all the moments of exaggeration needed for the Grand Blue theme are there. It's been 7 years since the last season, and something that scared me when this season was announced was a complete deviation from what it used to be(Like what happened with Hataraku Maou-sama! S2). I was glad that Season 2 built on the original, being true to the manga and having the same style as the first season. If you know the author, Kimitake, you know his works are very ecchi. This has been toned down at times for the anime adaptation, but you can still get the feel of it without it becoming the main identity of the show. It becomes a true comedy with ecchi instead of ecchi with comedy, if you understand what I mean. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Characters ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The character roster is built on what was there for season one, with some extra additions to make new stories and circles. These aren't just random characters, either. Some of them will make an actual important contribution to the story as it progresses. ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Soundtrack ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ The soundtrack is good. Comedy animes already have 90% of the work done with the jokes and visual triggers; the music just needs to get you in the vibe of the moment. Grand Blue does that well; when you're watching and one of the characters goes on a rampage, the song ramps up accordingly. I especially liked the OP/ED from this season when compared to the last one. I even added this ED to my personal playlist.
════ ⋆★⋆ ════ Conclusion ════ ⋆★⋆ ════ If you're like me, you skip everything and read only the conclusion because you don't want to get spoiled with other themes. So I will try to be brief on this point: Watch it.If you liked the first season, there's not much to think about, to be honest; it's more of the same comedy that we loved so much. It did take 7 years for the second season to arrive, but I'm glad it did while preserving the aesthetics of the manga and the first season.
