Author trying to justify anything under the excuse of "love"
Warning!! Plenty of spoilers ahead, if I used the spoiler tag, I'd practically have to censor the whole thing. Read with caution.

Literally everyone except Akemi is just straight up hot steaming garbage. I hate how the story justifies grooming and cheating. The moral of the story is supposed to be not everything needs to fit into the bounds of normality that society approves, or some fake philosophical bullshit. As if "let's not cheat on our partners" and "let's not become diddlers" are some oh so horrible shackles.

So what, just because Akemi's father "fell in love" with another woman, he can do whatever he wants and abandon his family? Mind you, the father just went and left the house. If Akemi didn't reach out first, I have doubts he would reach out properly to her. It's cruel to the mother, and to Akemi. The affair partner too, kept only apologizing to Akemi, as if her mother wasn't deeply affected by this ordeal. That was genuinely so disgusting to me. How could the story portray her, or the dad, as they did nothing wrong? There was a moment when Akemi saw her dad putting the glasses away or smth, and she thought "he never used to do this in our house". Which is when I thought how her mother, probably doing all the housework and child-rearing, sacrificed her life for the family, only to end up being portrayed as a burden. The father didn't even have the heart to end things well and grant a proper divorce without humiliating her? We're supposed to root for his affair?

And then the teacher and Kai's writer friend, Naoko? The excuses for them are laughable. What? Teacher getting all broody because societal norms can't stomach the fact he impregnated his HIGH SCHOOLER STUDENT? Cry me a river bitch. Absolutely should lose his teaching license, and never be allowed near kids. Same with Naoko. Idc if he never touched the kid, they were already dating. "Waiting" for him to grow up is gross. People were rightfully angry at such a writer. The excuse for him was "Oh society hates gay people". No, society hates 25 somethings preying on high school kids. To force readers to sympathize with him because he got depression (and later passed away from suicide) is such a cheap move from the author.

The biggest asshole must be Kai, not because what he did was the worst, but he got away with the most the way I see it. He cheated multiple times on Akemi, neglected her feelings, and dismissed her. After all that, Akemi was still in love with him?? When you cheat on someone, that's not love. It just pushes the stupid agenda of "men can cheat and still love their gf/wife". Bro deserved to get kicked off his high horse. The moment he was doing financially well, he decided to forget his day one? Again, the author takes the easy way out by granting him an early death, trying to force the tragedy. And of course, Akemi was taking care of him till the end, granting him a peaceful death.
