47/100A mediocre show with little to offer. An easy skip for most people & even if it’s not “bad”, it’s forgettable.Continue on AniList“I’m a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic” is (can you believe it?) an isekai based on a light novel; it follows our main character, Liam, as he’s reborn as the youngest son of a noble in a fantasy world. This could describe any number of isekai, but this is one of only 2 isekai from the winter 2025 season where the gimmick is that the MC is obsessed with magic. He goes from an unassuming spare son to an overpowered master of magic with a harem and his own nation over the course of this season and with a show this unoriginal, you could likely change a few words of this review and have it apply to a dozen other shows from recent years.
Story: 9/20
There’s not all that much to say about the story of this show; forgettable MC gets reincarnated, has an obsession with magic, gets Overpowered and proceeds to live out every shut-in’s wet dream. Harem? Check. Overwhelming power? Check. Founding a nation? Check. The score is the best description for this: 9/20. 45% just below average. There is a single word that people attribute to this show: forgettable. The story is just a step by step “he does this and then this and also then he does this” with no actual driving force behind it, no greater narrative purpose than to get Liam from the start of the story to the harem, power, the money, the self-insert goal.PV: 10/20
I wouldn’t even go so far as to say the production value of this show was anything other than average, it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good, it was just bland. The music was so forgettable that I already can’t remember the opening song and I listened to it 12 times these past 3 months. The character designs themselves were slightly better than average, but the animation did the art style no favours, dragging it right back down to the level of every other low-effort isekai we see season after season.Characters: 10/20
Liam himself is just mass-produced self-insert #12554 with no personality beyond liking magic and being a vaguely decent person; this unfortunately drags down the rest of the cast. Scarlett, Chris, Flora, Radon, Asuna and any other character connected to Liam have no chance to actually be characters because the story demands that they revolve their interests, personalities and overall reason for being around Liam; with him being so boring, that unfortunately puts all other characters in the show in a position where they can’t actually be characters in their own right.Enjoyment: 5/10
As I’m sure you can guess from everything above here, I’m not the biggest fan of this show; that said, I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “bad” - it’s not special, it’s not unique and it’s not interesting; what it is however, is a generic isekai, it’s noise; something I’d happily have on in the background while looking through my phone.Success: 13/30
This is a show that goes for the low-effort, passionless route to making money. In a sense, you could say it’s deserving of a 30/30 here, as it certainly nailed the “passionless” part. With that said, it’s so low down because even an isekai that most people would dismiss at first glance can be good, even the bad ones tend to have some stand-out feature, but this show is so unremarkable that I’m actually sitting here, struggling to remember parts of it, mere hours after completing episode 12. I can’t imagine calling a show that forgettable a success.Overall: 47/100
An inoffensive, bland power fantasy show - the review could honestly be boiled down to that and that alone. I find myself slightly disappointed in this one though, it kept seeming like something would happen to shake up the formula, but it never did. Something that honestly confused me was Radon, the dragon god. How did she come to be trapped by a minor noble house? Why didn’t she care that Liam murdered her children when they first met? And finally, why did she have to transform into a Loli? If another season ever comes, I’ll probably watch it, but those who don’t bother with this show or wouldn’t bother with a hypothetical season 2 aren’t missing out on much.

50/100Another mediocre trashy Isekai. Emblematic of mediocrity in the genre.Continue on AniListI wish there was more to write about this show, but it really is just a below average isekai that does nothing new. That could be the entire review and honestly, a show this bland and forgettable doesn't deserve the sheer word count this review may reach. The score I gave is 50/100. If this is all you needed to read, then cool, but to anyone who wants a more thorough dissection of this show, thanks for reading.
__The Aesthetics of Mediocrity:__ I am no stranger to generic fantasy or trashy mediocre isekais. I have a guilty pleasure of consuming these types of shows. Its because I have seen the absolute worst and the absolute best, that I can recognize was truly is just average.
There is an aesthetic to mediocrity and this show is a perfect example of it. The animation is fine when it needs to be, but takes a ton of shortcuts everywhere else and never gets beyond just being fine. They animated the show just well enough to fulfil the purpose of animation, but never went above and beyond. The character designs themselves are uninspired. There are two types of generic isekai protagonist, the short black or brown hair with the anime bangs or a more western looking type with colored hair. Liam, the MC of this anime, is the latter. He is that type of MC, the one where his biggest flaw is being kinda awkward and being too obsessed with magic. He is too good at everything and every character fawns over him. He has no actual struggles, if he struggled, then the power fantasy doesn't give instant gratification. Its the mark of a mediocre writer to have no faith in your characters or world to carry the narrative when good things aren't happening.
We never get Liam being introspective or showing a nuanced take on an issue. Liam chooses the best option every time, he is always right, whenever conflict occurs, it was out of his power, and he stops it almost as soon as it starts. Nothing truly bad happening isn't why the writing is so painfully average though. There are isekai that are super edgy where bad things happen all the time and they are as average or worse than this show. Its mediocre because none of it serves any purpose. Nothing meaningfully happens.__There is nothing here:__ This show has no identity. It does nothing special. Everything is derivative of something else. It wants so badly to be like Tensura. It wants the payoffs and narrative beats of Tensura, but doesn't want to do all the hard things like nuance, dialog, build-up, character arcs, adding depth, worldbuilding, etc. The hard parts of writing. Characters only exist when the MC is interacting with them, the world is almost entirely static until the MC interacts with it.
The sheer amount of ideas it takes directly from Tensura is insane. The magic system does nothing differently aside from using prime numbers to limit spell casts, but even then, multicasting as an op ability has been done dozens of times before. Essentially every single aspect of this show has been done before and done better.
Its the Harry Potterification of Isekais. Wide and vapid worlds where everything is derivative, nothing is truly original, and everything bends and breaks to maintain the escapist fantasy. And this show never gets away from that, it never tries to either.__Its by design:__ Everything mentioned is by design. The writing is lazy, because its a light novel adaptation. Nothing happens because bad things having lasting impact doesn't fit the power fantasy. The MC lacks any actual character because he is a self-insert. There are so many girls because its a harem fantasy, but none of them have any real characters because it would risk alienating audience members. Each character gets one trait, one quirk, and one purpose in the narrative. None of the characters ever really change outside of liking the MC more because the LN has to sell these characters.
The mediocrity is designed. It didn't have to be, it could have been good, but the writer chose to make slop. Why spend dozens or even 100s of hours making a map, flushing out the world, creating cultures, characters, history, lore, and putting care into the worldbuilding when you can draw a few rivers and some mountains and draw 3 random borders? Why be creative and come up with a distinct power system or a creative twist on an existing system? Why spend time writing character arcs or making characters deeper through complex motivations when you can just design a dozen generic girls to be attractive and fawn over the mc?__Just one of many:__ I could have made an identical review to almost any other trashy 5/10 isekai I've seen. I have done a similar review before, but this one is more personal. Tensura is one of my favorite anime ever. Seeing a show try to be it, but do literally everything so much worse inspired me to really look at why it was worse. It also made me appreciate the wackier isekais that are just as trashy, but at least try something different even if its stupid or trivial. This review will hopefully be forgotten about just this show will be.
