__The second part of a show that i didn't want to watch.__ 私の幸せな結婚 or "My happy marriage" season 2 continues the story of Miyo and her misfortunes, though this time they are a lot easier on her the script does not shy away from repeating some story beats and pointing them in a new direction, a good mix of familiarity and novelty that plays to their strengths.
I didn't particularly like that start but the more i watch the more i appreciated it, i appreciated it more since many of my gripes with season 1 came from how annoying and dumb the conflicts felt, i mean there is some dumb shit here but it doesn't get to the level where it gets me to actively dislike the show.
Though im a fan of many things that changed this season i can't keep going without mentioning that the opening and ending are way less memorable this season but the background music is basically the same level from what i can recall.
In case you want to check out what im saying
In many scenes you could chop out the music entirely and it would have the same effect, it really feels at times like they just added it for the fuck of it.
Honestly this might be really the only place where it doesn't feel like they improved so i felt necessary to add it even if its a pretty short section.
The start of the show is the main cast leaving for an investigation in the place where Kiyoka's parents live, basically repeats the pattern of Miyo being disrespected, her mother in law directly gives her a maid uniform so she can prove herself expecting her to quit, she starts as a way more bitter character than her son but soon enough it becomes apparent she is written to have a tough front and behind a pretty soft heart.
However we are surrounded with more caring characters, her father in law stops her from being slapped after the mother in law goes into a rage, hell Kiyoka actually acts the fiance part from the beginning not afraid to threaten his own mother after she bad mouths his soon to be wife.
It all gets resolved later on after some findings of this weird cultish group, this is not a perfect summary but really this is the less interesting part of the show all together.
I feel like the fact that the main character has other people to bounce off that are actually on her side makes the conflict feel a lot more tangible and gray so when it gets solved it is way more satisfying since this time its not something that could have been literally set on flames at the beginning of the story to be solved, it actually lets the main character act.
The final part of the story we finally see Miyo take way more agency moving the events of the story forward and not only reacting to them as they happen, her visions and powers demonstrate that she exists outside of the context of submissive wife character, nothing wrong with liking that type of character but for me that's too boring for the lead of a story.
BUT i do have a very big gripe with the way they manage a side character Kaoruko
A strong independent woman... But not actually
This character almost ends up feeling like a parody because of how badly her story is managed, so let me introduce her:
This is Koruko Jinnouchi, she is the only woman in the military force in this show:
- Constantly belittled by her comrades
- Explicitly called out as somebody that is out of place
- At one point it is explained that the bathroom for women is in another building because of how rare her position is
- She demonstrates being more skilled than one of the other soldiers and is insulted for this
I don't have to make the point of how she is oppressed for living in the wrong time period as a woman out of the norm, the show spits those talking points into your face.
So how do you manage her arc... Oh i know why not start by making her help Miyo clean up after the other guys who are incapable of being clean
by themselves, let's also make her immediately beg to be Miyo's friend when she is assigned as her body guard, pfff i mean her being the only woman in the corps and the bodyguard for Miyo is not enough justification for her being in the story, so let's make her interesting by making her the ex fiance of Kiyoka.Okay well now that we've put her in this place we need to develop her story with a very small conflict with the protagonist for the latter point, which actually wasn't even a conflict at all but just a waste of runtime.
Hmmm and for her grand finale let her be the one that gets fooled into helping the bad guys yeah yeah that for sure will uh... well thats her story wrapped, she will come back for girls night and to be there sometimes i guess, lets also insinuate that she might or might not fall in love with Godou for some reason.
Holy shit just why?
An interesting turn of events for a change
In this case the villan feels a lot more like a real threat not only for his magical abilities but also cause of his very obviously immature mental state Naoshi Usui concocts the most elaborate plans for what's basically domestic terrorism all because the girl he once was very close with wanted to protect her family, had a child and decided to stay caring for her instead of going running away with him and still somehow she was happy.
He also puts Arata on his side for a while, what i don't understand is how anyone in the main cast is happy hanging out with this psychopath considering what he did last season.
Naoshi after so much chaos and destruction is given an opportunity to mature by Miyo, a way for him to live for himself and he straight up has a fit, his fake suicide in the dream world leads to his very real death.
Naoshi is scary because although you might never meet a super powered illusionist, the world we live in is filled with these immature characters on positions of unfathomable power.
This show is very nice on the eyes when its showing this slice of life look into the world, though some fight/dream sequences feel underwhelming and the cg is... noticeable, i can't help but love the gorgeous sights of the landscapes and nicely designed interiors, even over that the clothes are the biggest treat in the moments where they are the center of the visuals.
The new characters have a good distinct design, nothing to make a fuss about but it manages to make them stand out.
I feel as though i've explored the broader aspects of the show and stated my opinion on them where it was worth it but for whoever cares i feel like the sound design of this show is pretty mediocre.
That said the strengths of this season lie on the main antagonists and the rise of Miyo as her own person, though i have pretty heavy critiques of the way Kaoruko is managed and i didn't for one second think her story was good i can't deny this is a huge step up from the first season in terms of story, even if you are not a fan or romance like me this managed to give me a pretty good time.
Can't really think of a real reason not to recommend it, it never feels like it drags or rushes, it's definitely not a production that was chopped up with problems on it, i have trouble calling it good but it is nowhere near bad.
