59/100It was average at best. I would have liked more tragedy and fewer clowns. 59/100Continue on AniListSpoiler Warning:
To Your Eternity Season 3 was the weakest so far. It had potential, and in my opinion, the studio did a great job. The voice acting was good, and even the fighting scenes were nice this season. I did not read the source material, so I can’t say if this adaptation was well made, but it felt like it wasn’t rushed. I will admit that watching it weekly did hurt the show since it got delayed multiple times. But all of that isn’t really an issue, and even without the delays, I would still give it the same score. This anime is supposed to make you feel things. Sadness mostly. But this season, there just wasn’t really anything that made me feel stuff apart from some flashbacks from the previous seasons. The drama is shit. I was kind of hoping this season would fix some of the issues I had with season 2, but the story is so shallow. There’s nothing on the line. No tension whatsoever. Past seasons had people dying left and right, but not this one. Not a single important character gets permanently killed. I don’t think letting characters die would necessarily help the story, but it would at least make things more tragic.
Also, maybe it’s just me, but are all parents this season bad people? To be more precise, Mizuha’s parents are bad people who made her want to die, Mimori’s mother is even worse than Mizuha’s parents, and I would say Yuuki’s parents neglect him and his sister a lot. And talking about characters, I think Hirotoshi being made into a low-life shut-in lolicon was really unnecessary. Even with that redemption arc, I don’t think it’s ok for him to get his stepsister back that fast. He was looking for Fushi in front of a school in that bondage getup, and he just flashed Yuuki back-to-back. It feels like the author tried to make him the worst kind of loser and give him a redemption arc just to show that otakus like Hirotoshi can change. But it’s so badly written.
Also, the entire occult club is full of clowns that are used for comedic relief, but those jokes never hit, and they are made at the worst time. Who makes a Wi-Fi joke while imprisoned by monsters that are about to take control of your body? I guess the girl squad with Tonari was a bit better. Them trash-talking fake Fushi was funny. But most of the time, I thought these characters made the story worse. Let’s hope these clowns don’t make a comeback later down the road.
The start of this season was interesting. The world being peaceful while still having the Nokkers taking control was great. And it made sense for Fushi not to trust them like he did throughout the whole show previously. But the entire coexistence stuff felt so forced. No one would ever want to befriend a monster whose goal is to take control of your body. I like how the solution to that is selling a special cream that blocks Nokkers, and also the use of microchips to “control” them. As if any of that could really stop them… Anyway, even if the Nokkers decide to reverse the situation, Black is here to stop them, right? Wrong. Black decided that this was a great time to get rid of his godly powers and start living a normal life. Anyway, Fushi is the backup. He’ll be able to stop them.
“Wait, instead of forcing his destiny onto him, he should get to choose if he wishes to be granted my powers, because Fushi is known to make smart decisions.”
Ok, this is exaggerated, but still, the Nokkers clearly retreated because of Black. Now that his powers are lost, I don’t know who or what could stop them. It’s as if no one was thinking about the future.
I’ll just throw this out here. Maybe Fushi could have taken the powers, gone on a quick crusade against the Nokkers and the Guardians, and used the same power Black used to get rid of them afterward and erase his memories.
But this isn’t my story...
Ok, that’s enough. I’m sure most of you already skipped to the end of the review anyway and gave me a thumbs down. If not, I’m grateful.
