DESCRIPTION
A boy lives in a floating town, where the poor scrape by and the rich live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. When he’s falsely accused of murder, though, his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash. Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and to travel the path to vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, a boy will have to become a warrior…

90/100A manga with incredible potential, and with an interesting and unique premise to back up for it.Continue on AniList__SPOILER FREE__ The post-apocalyptic sub-genre has seen it's fair share of exceptional works of art, including Blame!, Attack on Titan, Berserk, and many more. Gachiakuta is not too far off of becoming something great. Although we are only around 50 chapters in, this piece by Kei Urana is equipped with all the right aspects and with an incredible story behind it. Gachiakuta is unique to its own, and might just turn into something incredibly special down the line.
SYPNOSIS
The story involves an orphan boy named Rudo, who has a knack for salvaging broken or damaged items from trash, as he believes that they still have some value left of them, and also as a means to make money. Rudo resides in the slums, with his foster parent Regto, and he wants to help out in any way he can. However, this isn't an ordinary town. Picking up trash is seen as unlawful, and Rudo is at risk everytime. although being gifted with impressive physical abilities seems to help him escape trouble.
You see, Rudo was left alone after his father was convicted as a murderer and thrown into the Abyss, a massive, seemingly bottomless pit that seemingly consumes anything thrown into it. The town Rudo resides in dumps all it's trash into the Abyss, including criminals deemed guilty of serious crimes, such as murder or even salvaging trash as it is seen as a forbidden act. The Abyss is left out in the open for everyone to see, reminding them that if they break the rules, they might just get thrown down there too.
One day, Rudo realizes from the help of Regto and a friend of his that it's not worth risking your life for trash, and that maybe it's time to call it quits. However, on that same day, Rudo stumbles across a sight he wish he never saw, and is framed as the culprit for a crime that he swears he didn't commit. Unable to defend himself, Rudo is thrown into the Abyss himself. Realising that this may just be the last few moments of his life, He swears revenge onto the same people who gave him death, and disappears into the dark void...
CHARACTERS
The characters of this story are each to their own, with fresh backstories and interesting traits. Without going too much into detail, the characters are creatively designed and no major character in the story so far seems to be dull, with a plentiful amount of scenes and background stories to make you understand each one of them. It's one of those manga where every character is likeable. Since we are only around fifty chapters in, there's a chance that there are many more appearances of new characters to come, and will also provide more opportunities to flesh out the current personas that many of us already love.
ART
Now, the art is something else. It's truly incredible. The amount to detail
on each page, no, on each panel, is wonderfully thought out and makes it aesthetically pleasing. To avoid any sort of spoilers, I decided not to include any fight scenes, but wow, the fight scenes are AMAZING, I'll just leave it at that. The settings are wonderfully designed too, which each place suiting the apocalyptic vibe perfectly, giving you that dystopian feel. The characters again are wonderfully designed too, with clean features and each having unique characteristics to tell them apart. You know, there's some manga out there where certain characters look the exact same, just saying. Gachiakuta does not do that at all.OVERALL (So far)
Overall, the story is unique to it's own and is an interesting read that I would recommend to anyone. There are little flaws, and with only 50 chapters in, there is an incredible amount of potential for this manga. There is only a matter of time before it is adapted into an anime, yet I feel like this manga is incredibly raw and detailed that people who have never read a manga before should consider Gachiakuta being their first read. Give it a try, you won't regret it. Peace out.

THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA: GACHIAKUTA
have you ever wondered what would happen if a sick ass alt woman and a graffiti artist teamed up to work on an art project? yeah, me neither. but, it sure as hell worked.

__THE PLOT__
the story revolves around a world that is separated into two main areas; the SPHERE and the GROUND. our main boy RUDO is a supposedly-executed sphereite who was dropped off of the sphere after being accused of killing his uncle. GACHIAKUTA follows his story, which consists of Rudo joining the CLEANERS (JANITORS), an agency with the purpose of defending "safe zones" from massive monsters made of trash, called TRASH BEASTS. the Cleaners defeat these monsters in two different ways; beating them up and destroying them, like how the Cleaners' SUPPORTERS group does, or by defeating them as a GIVER.
__THE POWER SYSTEM__
firstly, if you don't know what a power system is:
a power system consists of the way a superpower is used, how a superpower is acquired, and how different superpowers interact. the power system in GACHIAKUTA is all about love. basically what i mean by that is: if you love an object, said object could come to life and be used as a weapon. lets use the character Zanka Nijiku (shown above) as an example. Zanka's beloved object is a mere stick, but he loves his stick :) this stick has been loved for so long that Zanka is able to bring out the stick's hidden power and turn it into a bladed, spiked, longer and tougher version of itself, called the Lovely Assistaff! this type of power system is very unique, and allows the story to basically do anything. an old woman carrying a toy truck that can transform into a massive monster truck is technically a plausible power, even if it doesn't actually exist in the story.
but, the GACHIAKUTA power system truly excels because of its lack of powercreep (meaning new enemies don't get progressively stronger, but rather the main characters are forced to THINK of how to defeat them, rather than just train and get "stronger"). enemies in gachiakuta are on the same playing field as the good guys.
__THE ARTISTS__
and now we're onto the most striking part of this series.
the absolutely GORGEOUS art, from both artists. GACHIAKUTA is illustrated by two artists. our storywriter, background artist, and character artist is the absolutely wonderful KEI URANA. but GACHIAKUTA isn't truly GACHIAKUTA without the bold, cold, and masterful graffiti of Hideyoshi Andou

firstly, URANA-SENSEI:
KEI URANA was first introduced to manga through the likes of ATSUSHI OKUBO and his work SOUL EATER, which came full circle when later on in life she was able to be his assistant during the creation of FIRE FORCE. that is probably where her dynamic, cartoonish style of posing her characters originally comes from, but this isn't her copying Okubo, not even close. URANA is an interesting mangaka because she uses both digital and traditional ways of creating manga. in a recent interview, she shows the creation of physical manga panels through inking onto ripped pieces of paper, which is very traditional. she mainly uses this technique when making backstory panels for characters. i could go on and on about URANA-SENSEI but if you're truly interested in her then go follow her social medias, shes a very real-feeling person, unlike some authors who stay all mysterious.and lastly, HIDEYOSHI ANDOU:
not much is known about ANDOU other than his beautiful graffiti that perfectly encapsulates what GACHIAKUTA is. go check out his beautiful murals.
__lastly, THE CHARACTERS__
im not gonna be diving into each main character, but rather what makes the characters in GACHIAKUTA special. our main four characters have a wide range of personalities and each have their own problems, let it be mental or physical. this can range from fear of a new world, doubt in their own abilities, parental expectations, and even the weight of being destined to bring unity. these are COMPLEX characters.
the world of GACHIAKUTA has many different people from many different backgrounds and many different ideologies. we have the CLEANERS, the RAIDERS, the HELL GUARD, the SPHEREITES, and even the people of CANVAS TOWN and the performers of the DOLL FESTIVAL. everyone has their own trials and tribulations. let it be RUDO and his revenge story on the ANGEL and the people of the SPHERE, let it be REMLIN and their struggle to take on the duties their predecessor had, and even FOLLO and his passion and pain that went into curating his own VITAL INSTRUMENT.
but these characters are more than their backstories. they can be funny, they can be determined, and they can be mindful of the people around them. the characters in GACHIAKUTA are what make GACHIAKUTA what it is.
THANK YOU FOR READING!
i was really surprised when i realized GACHIAKUTA only had one review prior to this, and that the review was from when the manga first started. i hope that you enjoyed reading this and i hope you can give this beautiful manga some of your time. and please. support the artists.
