  Labyrinth fight club - Magic School edition

  
  
  Reign of the Seven Spellblades takes the magic school formula, throws it into a darker world, cooks up a fundamentally solid cast of characters, and then proceeds to struggle for fifteen episodes to deliver anything more than fleeting emotional impact and flashes of potential.

  

  
  

  Concept

  Reign of the Seven Spellblades (abbreviated Seven Spellblades from here on) is a dark take on Harry Potter. Magic is absolutely deadly, from an internal and external perspective. Magical abnormalities are more common than not in this school. You may go insane from your magic, whether you practice it or not. That's honestly one of the coolest takes that can be done. Below the school lies a Labyrinth - no differently functional that a dungeon in most "adventurer guild" style shows. Looking back on the journey this show takes you on, it ends up being a fight club in the Labyrinth - this magic school seems more dysfunctional than any school I could ever imagine. Teachers give some practical lessons, but anything below ground is a complete free for all. Seven Spellblades has a neat concept and a lot of good points, but it fails to properly bring them together to a satisfying story by the end.

  
  

  Highlights

  Seven Spellblades has a few excellent plot points. In particular we still the most interesting plot thread fairly early around episode 5&6. Sadly, the rest of the show viewers most likely end up wanting more of that plot point, but it never manifests.

  Animation and general quality leaves less up to your imagination. For a JC Staff show, this looks far above what I normally expect to see from them.

  
  

  The Lows

  The show covers most of the tropes we expect to see in a magic school. Needless antagonism, girls who are empathetic and make it their friend's problems, bullies, duels, and lessons about friendship are in no short supply here. We still see plenty of naïve characters, but we still a significant step up in maturity from the early teenage naïvety that we see in comparable shows like "Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon?". Maybe these tropes don't bother you, but we don't see a particularly fresh take on any of them.

  The first true issue the show brings to the table is the weird disconnect between what a school does - teach skills and provide mentorship, and what actually happens. We see some teaching, but more of the runtime involves time spent in the lawless Labyrinth below the school. Within the Labyrinth fights to the death are common, students lose control and become unrestrained threats to others, and students and teachers make secret bases. The world marries a magical school to a dungeon, and it doesn't fundamentally come together to make a cohesive world.

  Our second major issue lies in failure of the show to develop characters fast enough. The motivations of characters are generally nebulous, except for our main character Oliver. In reality, we have a handful of main characters that are forced to act based on side characters forcing them to act. This further drives a lack of character development. Most "main" characters are one-note.

  
  

  Personal Scoring

  All things considered, I enjoyed some parts of this show immensely. However, by the end I was wishing for it to be over. Personally I give it a begrudging 7.5/10 because I like so many concepts and see a show that could become excellent with some more development.

  
  

  Official Scoring

  Official scoring in mind, Seven Spellblades is competently produced, the show has good enough pacing, character designs are solid, and the action is fairly good. Yet at the end of the day, the show fails to be memorable. A major part of that is the flawed lack of character motivations, lack of stake, lack of additional charm, lack of significant plot development. Most of these seemingly stem from the original source material. The story may work in the form of a light novel, but it certainly is too slow, and too lacking in a show with a relatively long runtime. Regrettably, I have to give a 6.8/10. It's difficult to recommend when there's so many better shows out there to pick from. It's such a let down that it took someone three years to bother writing a review for it (June 2026).
