Tamon Fukuhara and the Science of Making the Perfect Boy Failure!
When you're a 13 year old teenage girl, you read One Direction Wattpad fanfiction: stories where you're a seemingly normal high school girl being sold by your mother to your favorite boy band. You squeal because Harry, the most popular one, has taken a keen interest into you, and you alone. This fantasy carries you for about a year and a half until their reign's seemingly bitter end

10 (or is it 15!?) years later, you have better taste, and way higher standards, so you read Tamon-kun.

Utage Kinoshita is a die-hard fan-girl of the rising stars in the music industry, F/ACE. The titular character and also, the center of the group, Tamon Fukuhara... is THE hottest guy around... with his perfectly "wild and sexy" personality is taking the groups to new heights of popularity. Utage, who wants to support her oshi with all her might, gets a job doing house cleaning calls... and one of those houses' ends up being... Tamon's!??!!? To her surprise, what she finds isn't his wild and sexy side, but instead... a shaking, trembling boy-failure constantly teetering over the edge (both figuratively and literally)!

I think on the surface, Tamon-kun Ima Docchi!? follows some pretty standard story beats... Sometimes, the plot is too convenient, and Utage falls into the palms of F/ACE just as easily as your mother hands over your luggage to the 1D bodyguard.

However, in that excessively convenient plot, Shiwasu-sensei manages to strike a great balance of push-and-pull, will they-won't-they-ism through the character's depths and personalities.

There is no one more fitting of the phrase, "Fake it 'till you make it!" than Tamon Fukuhara.

Tamon-kun is this year's poster boy for gap moe. While he does have his wild and sexy image, you just can't help but fall in love with his boy-failure counterpart. You would think that this kind of bit could soon become one-note within a few chapters, but I find that the stories progression helps Tamon grow more out of his shell, and more into the person he wants to be. But even more than that, in this romantic comedy, his extra charm lies in his selfishness.

As an anime-boy aficionado, I can feel the metaphorical nosebleed incoming... Tamon is a top-tier guy. Sure, he can be cool and sexy for the poster images of F/ACE and all that, but I think his REAL charm lies in his underlying patheticness. He cries when Utage isn't there, he looks for her in the crowd, invisible tail wagging all the while... and... deep in his heart, there is this darkness written in him that you can't help but grin wickedly at when certain moments happen. He uses his cool and wild side to charm Utage for his own selfish reasons, they give him a dark smile when things go his way, or when Utage pays attention to him... Tamon-kun knows what he wants...! And he's not afraid to-- okay, well, he is afraid to get it, but when he pushes past that...! His cuteness skyrockets to a 400%. You want to smile and turn that page, muttering "he's such a freak," all the while...

I haven't even had the time to mention any of the other characters, who, surprisingly, all have their own charms. I think if you're looking for something fresh in the romcom genre, this is a good, fun read with great progression that doesn't get stale!
