An such unexpected ingredient for deer lovers tryouts.
The most important term before reading it that “humor is subjective” but since this one is a mysterious gem in the new gen manga industry, I can find it irrelevant and genuine that it kinda works or execute well for the elements so I will try to be more logic enough and so here’s my thoughts.

Story: 4

It starts on a protagonist named Torako Koshi which is basically a yankee until she founds a deer human hybrid on hino which is the mascot named Nokotan, she helps her and together they make a deer club to be as more bigger and making a propaganda about it….that’s all. If im being honest here, the plot itself can might be remembered or it didn’t take it back as you read more chapters because since it relies bigger and common on gag humor then it will be more silly, slapstick and a attempted enjoyment for the reader yet it’s not logic and it’s a total rush where it becomes the absurdity of a downside.

Characters: 5

This is where the things are getting strange and cocky, one of the most astonishingly character that you might already know since the humor itself is basically on track and that is Nokotan, whenever she goes on new adventures of hino city, she can be lazy, stupid, doing some deer shenanigans which is basically execute pretty alright on paper and the other characters itself are just particularly fine (except one) so to determine about these side characters like bashame and nekoyamada, they are basically strange, cute and dumb while koshi tan is the disturbance and the punchbag of the manga and I think that one character that must not literally exist that is anko, she’s literally a plot device that is so annoying and so diligent on other characters where it degenerates my reading attention like literally…

Art: 7.5

Now this is what im talking about, the art is basically what you imagine on your expectations, it fits right in with the story of its character designs, backgrounds and aswell the panels. It will eventually become more silly and stupid enough of whats going on happen through the next of pages which on which becomes the absolute advantage of the story and it gives me more credit for the author itself.

My final thoughts:

So far, this is one of the most somewhat enjoyable and the strangest manga I’ve ever read in my viewing, despite in every situation itself on each chapter that has familiar aspect to be more episodic and absurdness which fits agonizingly okay in my alley and to criticize this, if you want to read on a gag humor that relies on a bigger impact that it has silliness on a much brain off story, then this one is for you and to solve this for the readers, it can be a risk to read this depending on what humor you like so to recommend this, just read a few chapters and if its not funny enough then bound to drop but if you are brave enough that you find it more enjoyable then its alright.

Since this is a preliminary review, it might end soon in a few years or decades and I will update my score if my expectations are changed for the manga if its bad or not. So anyways have a good read deeries.

My Deer Friend Nokotan is a gag comedy series with slice of life elements. The plot revolves around Koshi Torako and her deer friend Shikanoko. Throughout the series they get up to all sorts of mischief with their friends in the deer club and the student council. Many of the jokes and references rely on at least some Japanese cultural knowledge, and as a result the humour tends to be polarizing. Its best to start reading this manga with the idea that humour is subjective in mind.

Story: 4/10

The best way to describe the story is by saying that there is no story. This is not surprising, given it's a slice of life comedy series. What little plot we do get acts solely as context for why the events of the manga are unfolding. As soon as it explains how Torako and Shikanoko meet, there stops being a story.

Characters: 9/10

As with most slice of life shows, the characters are what matter most. My Deer Freind Nokotan features a large roster of characters, all of which get plenty of time in the spotlight. Every character has something unique to them, from Bashame's farming to Nekoyamada's craftiness. The only divisive character seems to be Anko, who acts as a parody of the little sister trope in anime and manga.

Art: 10/10

I know this rating might seem like a stretch, but hear me out. Within the context of being a comedy series, My Deer Friend Nokotan's art style is perfect. Sometimes during sillier moments, the characters will display a more chibi or line-art look. But overall every panel is drawn with extraordinary attention to detail like any other Oshioshio artwork. There are times where you can probably count the individual strands of hair on Torako's head because shes drawn with so much detail.

Overall Preliminary Score: 8/10

My Deer Friend Nokotan seems to be a very misunderstood and divisive series. The humour comes off dry to most people, and a lot of readers seem to go in with the impression that comedy is the only thing this manga has to offer. My Deer Friend Nokotan should be read with an open mind. After all, slice of life is an important part of this manga. If you don't like slice of life or cute girls doing cute things, you will be less likely to enjoy reading it. There isn't much of a story or narrative, but there shouldn't have to be in a genre like this. While I'd rate the story (or lackthereof) fairly low, the beautiful artwork and bountiful cast of characters are what truly matter here. The manga is still publishing, and I can't say for sure how long it will take to finish. What I can say is that whether it ends tomorrow or in 10 years, its absolutely worth your time to at least give it a shot.
