No piece of art is perfect. Whether it be in our modern tastes or back throughout the decades and centuries. This is especially true for any form of storytelling. Be it a short or long story, something can be pointed to as a flaw. This isn't even accounting for personal taste. So when a story has obvious flaws, it should also have something good or great to try to make up for those flaws. Coffee Moon falls into this category. It is an obviously flawed story that makes up for its flaws with an incredible story and fantastic execution on its ending and premise.
Coffee Moon is a very short story at 6 volumes in length. With this manga being so short, it can be expected for it to be solid in its execution. I think this is a flawed way of thinking. Whether a manga is short or long has no bearing on how it was executed. I said before that Coffee Moon executed its premise fantastically. I do believe this, but I also said Coffee Moon was flawed. Coffee Moon has a bizarre genre shift from volume 1 to volume 2. It's very jarring when it does happen since there's little to no indication of it happening. It just sort of happens. Completely out of nowhere. This sudden shift in what Coffee Moon is feels a bit messy. It's that obvious flaw that I mentioned before. Yet this sudden shift does not immediately ruin Coffee Moon for me. It is jarring, but it's obvious that there is something else beyond it that's being built up to. There's little bits of world building and character work that's happening in the background and is going to pay off in a major way. Speaking of that world building, it seems to me like it was the most thought through. Little details that can jump out to you immediately. Bonus material in the back of the book adding some mystery and intrigue. I think discovering this kind of stuff yourself is the most interesting way to experience it, so I'm not going to talk about it much further.Little details are sprinkled everywhere in this short story. It seems obvious to me that this was a story the author poured a lot of time and thought into. It's something that, again, while obviously flawed, is also easily enjoyable. It's like the title suggests, a Coffee Moon. A bitter taste with a beautiful glow. Which aspect you decide to focus on or remember is up to you. Me personally? I like to think having both mixed together is what makes this so special.
