DESCRIPTION

Worst in studying but best in fighting!?
I ve been reading this manhwa for a very long time, and its probably been several years since it first released. After more than 300 chapters, I finally have enough experience with the manhwa to give it a fair review. As always, I ll evaluate it based on a few criteria:

Story – 7.8/10:

The story is built on a very simple idea and kinda similar to many Kdramas that deal with the issue of school violence, bullying. The story follows a nerd student named Yoon Gamin. Since childhood, he has been exposed to martial arts and had a deep passion for it. However, there's more to him than that he is also extremely competitive, especially when it comes to studying. Unfortunately, the better he is at martial arts, the worse he is at studyings. Despite possessing monstrous fighting abilities, Gamin has no desire to become the overlord of his school. His dream is actually very ordinary: study hard, get into university, and live a normal student life. The problem is that his school is filled with violence. Classrooms and hallways are essentially battlefields, and even the teachers choose to look the other way. Together with his teacher, Gamin creates a club called the Study Group, whose members all share the same goal: studying hard and getting into their dream university. As the story progresses, however, the formula starts to repeat itself: a new villain appears → both sides fight → new members join the Study Group → another villain appears → more fighting to protect friends. If the series had been more creative or cut down on some of the unnecessary repeat, I would have given it a higher score. Unfortunately, because it has gone on for so long, I cant give the story any higher.

Art – 8.5/10:

The artwork in Study Group isn't overly detailed or flashy, but it's incredibly easy on the eyes. Every character has a distinctive design, making them easy to recognize. The action scenes are clear and easy to follow, body movements are well illustrated, and the aura effects during fights look fantastic. The funny scenes are also drawn exceptionally well some of them genuinely had me lol

Characters – 8.8/10:

Now we re getting to what I consider the strongest aspect of this manhwa. Throughout the story, Yoon Gamin meets a wide variety of male and female characters. The character writing is solid, diverse, and the supporting cast never feels useless. They always contribute when it matters. At the end of the day, they re simply students who have been abandoned by both society and the education system. Because of that, the friendships between them and Gamin feel genuine, relatable, and easy to empathize with. Personally, my favorite moments are whenever Gamin's uncle appears or when girls end up "competing" for Gamin's attention. Those scenes had me laughing so hard I could barely breathe, lol.

Emotion & Action – 9/10:

Study Group features incredibly exciting action scenes that are fast paced, impactful, and decisive. Sometimes its a 1vs1 fight. Sometimes its a group battle. Other times its a conflict against entire organizations that influence society from behind the scenes. The author knows exactly how to satisfy readers who enjoy action. If you re an action fan, Study Group will have no trouble keeping you entertained. As for the emotions of the story, we get to see the determination and perseverance of the members of the Study Group. They never give up despite the environment surrounding them. The group wasnt created to fight. It was created to prove that even in a place consumed by violence, there are still students who genuinely want to learn, improve themselves, and get in university. The manhwa doesntt focus heavily on psychological depth. Instead, it highlights the ongoing issue of school violence in South Korea, where places that should be dedicated to education and friendship are transformed into battlefields for delinquent students seeking dominance and validation.

Weaknesses:

As the series progresses, the fights become less exciting because they start to feel repetitive and overly drawn out. Gamin became too strong, making many battles predictable. The villains gradually become easier to anticipate, and the academic side of the Study Group receives less and less attention. Compared to the early chapters, the story now feels more like a group of students going fighting people rather than a group of students trying to study and achieve their dreams.

Overall Thoughts:

Study Group is not a manhwa with an outstanding plot, deep psychological themes, or great storytelling. However, if you re looking for a series with: great comedy, plenty of action, strong entertainment value, lovable cast of supporting characters, then Study Group delivers exactly what you re looking for. And if you enjoying the manhwa, you can also check out the live action adaptation aswell. The cast did a pretty good job bringing the characters to real life!

- 9.5 - 10: Excellent (Must read)
- 9.0 - 9.4: Very good (Highly recommend)
- 8.5 - 8.9: Cool but not really special (Good enough to read)
- 8.0 - 8.4: Average (Read for fun)
- 7.9 < : So bad (Ignore or you will get tramatized)
